WF Nutcracker wins Supreme Champion Huacaya at McKenzie Highland A&P Show

Waratah Flats Nutcracker at Fairlie Show, April 2019

Waratah Flats Nutcracker won his fourth Supreme Show Championship ribbon as he lead the field at the McKenzie Highland A&P Show in April 2019.

The judge Sarah Busby commented on both his well built frame and his fine, soft handling fleece. This coupled with his high frequency crimp style, great density and amazing lustre, all combined to give him the award.

WF Nutcracker who has now won Supreme Champion Huacaya at four of the six shows he has entered is now quickly stacking up the trophy count. He was DNA tested and AANZ certified as a stud male in late April, and is now working as one of our “in house” stud males at Waratah Flats.

Malvern Show 2019 Supreme Champion Light Fawn

The 2019 Malvern A&P Show was a great seal of approval for Waratah Flats Alpaca Stud’s breeding programme, as we were awarded no less than three Supreme Colour Championship broad ribbons on the day.

WF Nutcracker – Supreme Champion Medium/Dark Fawn Huacaya

WF Pilgrim – Supreme Champion Light Fawn Huacaya

WF Paris – Supreme Champion White Huacaya

While our lovely intermediate brown male WF St Patrick won Champion Brown Male and our little junior brown male WF Pompei also won his class. A great day as all the members of our show team came home having won their individual classes.

We were particularly please that three of the champions were sired by our home bred stud male Waratah Flats Hat Trick, further endorsing the wisdom of our genetic selection and breeding decisions.

Carrying on the legacy of Waratah Flats Fire Cracker, we are now pleased that one of his sons Waratah Flats Nutcracker has won Supreme Champion Huacaya at the Winchester A&P Show on Saturday the 3rd March 2018.

WF Nutcracker has a fine soft handling medium fawn fleece, with loads of style and character. While still only a junior he is showing great potential for the future and we will follow his progress with interest.

Millduck Tyson arrives to take up stud duties

We welcome the arrival of our new medium brown stud male from the well known Millduck Alpaca Stud in Australia. MD Tyson has impressed with both his genetic background (MD Oregon and Banksia Park) and with his dense and stylish fleece. He will start his stud duties at Waratah Flats as an “in-house” stud male, adding another layer to our colour breeding programme.

WF Krakatoa wins Supreme Champion at Ellesmere A&P Show

One of our rising three year old huacaya males “Waratah Flats Krakatoa” has recently taken out Supreme Champion at the Ellesmere A&P Show. This is WF Krakatoa’s first Supreme Championship, although he has a number of age group and fleece show broad ribbons to his name. This is the second year that Waratah Flats fawn males have taken out this award at Ellesmere – last year it was WF Fire Cracker. WF Krakatoa is now a AANZ certified male and will start working this summer as part of our breeding programme.

WF Fire Cracker off to Europe

Waratah Flats Fire Cracker is this month heading off to “Alpaca Flanders” in Belgium to take up stud breeding duties with his new owners Thijs and Theo. Fire Cracker has been a firm favourite with many alpaca people as he has toured around the shows in the South Island and we shall miss him when he goes. We have been delighted with the offspring he has left with us and look forward to the last half a dozen more cria we are expecting this coming summer.

Impressive fibre test results for stud males

The fibre testing results for the Waratah Flats alpaca stud male team (shorn November 2015) have continued to show impressive returns following the testing of mid side samples earlier this year.

  • Forestglen Seth (10th shearing) 19.8u, 3.6 SD, 18.2 CV and CF of 99%
  • Waratah Flats Fire Cracker (6th shearing) 20.7u, 3.6 SD, 17.5 CV and CF of 99%
  • Waratah Flats Rising Star (5th shearing) 22.0u, 4.1 SD, 18.5 CV and CF of 96%
  • Waratah Flats Hat Trick (4th shearing) 22.8u, 3.4 SD, 15.0 CV and CF of 98%
  • Waratah Flats Imp Wizard (3rd shearing) 18.8u, 3.4 SD, 18.0 CV and CF of 100%
  • Waratah Flats Krakatoa (2nd shearing) 16.8u, 2.9 SD, 17.3 CV and CF of 100%
  • Waratah Flats King Kong (2nd shearing) 15.6u, 2.1 SD, 13.2 CV and CF of 100%

These impressive micron levels, coupled with the low SD readings, continues to give our stud males a very soft handle to their fleeces. We are also seeing these fine fibre traits passing to their offspring. We now look forward to this years shearing.

Fire Cracker wins Supreme Champion at Ellesmere Show

It was another successful day for the Waratah Flats show team at this year’s Ellesmere A&P Show held last Saturday. With 115 alpaca entries at Ellesmere Show this year it continues to be one of the largest spring shows in Canterbury.  So we were delighted when our five year old fawn stud male, Waratah Flats Fire Cracker, continued to shine through and ended the day winning Supreme Champion Huacaya.

Other show results on the day were:

WF Larkspur – 2nd in a strong junior white female class of 15 alpacas

WF Kentucky – 1st in the junior light fawn males and Champion Light Fawn

WF Keystone – 1st in the intermediate light fawn male

WF Fire Cracker – 1st in the senior medium fawn males, Champion Fawn and Supreme Champion

Export to Germany

June 2015

We would like to offer our congratulations to Talina Lorei and her family at the Lopaka Ranch in northern Germany for the purchase of three lovely Waratah Flats females that have just been exported and have safely arrived in Europe. These females were selected by Talina on her visit to New Zealand in September last year, when she was looking for new genetic breeding stock for their developing alpaca ranch.

Talina is a delightful young lady that helped out a number of alpaca breeders at the shows around Canterbury last spring, including the Alpaca Expo. She has a good nature with the alpacas and an excellent understanding of the quality of alpaca fleece.

At Waratah Flats, Talina selected three Forestglen Seth daughters because of their soft handling fleece characteristics and their low micron. Each of these females has since been mated to WF Hat Trick and we wish them well with these lovely females and their future offspring.
